Geometry for Toddlers!?
Geometry
before age three? You bet! Toddlers learn geometry through their
eyes, hands, and bodies as they crawl through tunnels, run around
corners, and stack boxes. Your little explorer gains spatial sense as
she experiences how her body moves in relation to objects and
structures in the world. As she moves “my body” and “my
things”, she starts to show her understanding of location and
position by using or understanding words like on,
off, under, below, in and out, and of distance by using words like
near, far, and next to.

Music Lessons Enhance IQ
A new study from The University of
Toronto helps us continue to prove the benefits of music to young
children. The recently published research report
provides solid evidence that music lessons can improve a young child’s
IQ and intellectual development. The study was conducted on a group of 6
year old children who were assigned to participate in music lessons,
drama lessons, or no lessons. Since the researchers found solid evidence
supporting that music lessons enhance a child’s IQ, the report was
chosen to be published in the August issue of Psychological Science.
As the report shares:
As the report shares:
The participating children were given IQ tests before and after the lessons. The results of this study revealed that increases in IQ from pre- to post-test were larger in the music groups than in the two others. Generally these increases occurred across IQ subtests, index scores, and academic achievement.http://mindsonmusic.kindermusik.com/benefits-of-music/music-lessons-proven-to-enhance-a-childs-iq/
The Amazing Effects of Music on the Brain
“Students involved in arts in the
curriculum are four times more likely to be recognized for academic
achievement, three times more likely to be elected to class office, four
time more likely to participate in math and science fair, three times
more likely to win an award for school attendance and four times more
likely to win and award for writing an essay or poems. Young artists,
as compared with their peers, are likely to attend music, art and dance
classes nearly three times as frequently; participate in youth groups
nearly four times as frequently; read for pleasure nearly twice as
often; and perform community service more than four times as often. The benefits of exposing children to music and the arts are indisputable.”

Village Thought for the Week
SOCIAL SKILLS
Babies
love to watch those
around them interact.
This is
how they learn to function as social beings and respond to
interactions.
Social
dances give Baby an opportunity to build upon his social skills by
being in an environment with an adult who is greeting and socializing with
other adults or children. Through this interaction babies
will acquire skills such as making
eye contact and using appropriate greetings.

Inspiration
Lily, a walker in a The Rhythm of my
Day pilot class, picked up the sign language for the word WHERE very
quickly. As lily's family was driving home from vacation, her mom was
singing Jingle Go the Baby Bells. When Lily inserted the sign
language for WHERE at the appropriate place in the song, Mom let out
a squeal of excitement, so exuberant that Dad almost drove off the
road! It is not always evident to educators and parents when a child
is learning. This story about lily and her family is a perfect
example of the unexpected moments at which children share their
understanding.

Our Time thought for the Week
Most everyday locomotor movements of children, such as walking, running and crawling, involve the use of the arms and/or legs. Rolling however, is initiated from the center of the body, with the body being propelled in a prone state by the hips and torso. Rolling is also unique in that it allows the child (or adult!) to experience the sensation of seeing the world from his stomach and back all in one continuous movement. This provides good stimulation for the vestibular system, which is important in many ways to a child's development, especially for his sense of balance and orientation in space.

Village - The Details
“Village” is a bonding and learning experience for parent and baby.
Class length: 30-45 minutes
Who knew that gazing into your baby’s eyes could be the most exciting part of your day? In Kindermusik, we understand how precious this time is with your little one. That’s why we created Village.
In a Kindermusik Village class, we take those special bonding moments between you and your baby and add in a unique blend of musical learning activities that stimulate and engage all of the senses. Your educator will teach you how to encourage your baby’s learning through vocal play, object exploration, instruments, and creative movement.
What you’ll experience in class
• Variety of music. Musical diversity builds strong neural networks in a baby’s forming mind, which is why each Kindermusik semester contains an array of styles, sounds, and genres.• Instrument play. Age-appropriate experiences with child-safe instruments enhances a sense of rhythm and steady beat, develops a keen awareness of the distinguishing qualities of sound, and encourages spontaneity and creativity.
• Dance. A classroom full of baby and adult pairs dancing together helps a little body develop the muscle strength needed to crawl and walk and helps a little heart to fall in love with the sheer joy of responding to music.
• Together time. A Kindermusik class is truly the essence of “quality time,”offering you a place to create special memories with your child, gain new insights into your child’s development, and nurture your child’s natural love of music.
• Expert advice. A Kindermusik educator explains “what-to-watch-for” every step of the way and how each activity enhances your child’s complete development
• Learning continues at home. With the home materials, the learning continues at home with your child’s best teacher—you!

Our Time - The Details
“Our Time” helps your toddler blossom and grow right before your eyes!
Class length: 30 - 45 minutes
For your toddler, every day brings new discoveries and opportunities to explore the world around him. Despite their growing independence, toddlers still long for the safety and security of parental closeness. During this time, she relishes the comfort of familiar things while seeking new challenges.
Kindermusik Our Time encourages her to be creative, to initiate her own ideas and to respond in her own ways, while your active participation gives her the security she needs. As you play instruments, sing, move, and explore, you’ll uncover an engaging musical world while building your child’s confidence, self-control, and communications skills.
What you’ll experience in class
• Instrument exploration and ensemble skill development. Your child will explore the physical characteristics and sounds of age-appropriate instruments which will eventually lead her to discover her potential for beat, rhythm, and melodic ensemble playing.• Vocal play. Through vocal play, toddlers learn to form vowels and consonants, say words and phrases, and imitate rhythm and vocal inflection. In Kindermusik Our Time, vocal play is presented within the context of songs, chants, and activities done in class.
• Exploration Time. Your child will love discovering specially designed instruments, textures, sounds and movements.
• Story time and early literacy. Listening to stories enhances language and speech development and fosters awareness of sounds, teaches use of language, and sends the message that words and symbols have meaning. The same experiences that help your child learn to read a book also help her learn to read music.
• Movement Activities. Each class provides various opportunities for movement such as synchronized movement, group dances and circle games, and even expressive movement.
• Together Time. Kindermusik is the essence of quality time, allowing you to make the most of the fleeting toddler years and giving you the time and the tools to make music and memories together in class and at home.
• Expert advice. A Kindermusik educator explains how our musically based activities enhance your child’s complete development.
Enrollment includes
• Developmentally appropriate curriculum for parents and toddlers 18 months to 4 years old• 12-week semester

The Science Behind It
- “Musical training as children makes better listeners later in life,” said Nina Kraus, the Hugh Knowles Professor of Neurobiology, Physiology and Communication Sciences at Northwestern. Source: A Little Music Training Goes a Long Way
- One-year-old babies who participate in interactive music
classes with their parents smile more, communicate better and show
earlier and more sophisticated brain responses to music. The findings were published recently in the scientific journals Developmental Science and Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.
- “Music and reading are related via common neural and
cognitive mechanisms and suggests a mechanism for the improvements in
literacy seen with musical training,” according to the team lead researcher, Dr Nina Kraus, at Northwestern University.
Researchers from the Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory at Northwestern
University tested children on their ability to read and to recognize
words. This was compared to the extent of their auditory working memory
(remembering a sequence of numbers and then being able to quote them in
reverse), and musical aptitude (both melody and rhythm).
Just a few of the reasons Kindermusik is so good for your little one.

Our Time
In the past, Our Time, has always been my most popular class. It's for children age 1.5 - 3.5 years and their caregivers. We sing, dance, explore instruments, learn social skills and just have a lot of fun. I've had many mom's tell me the class became a treasured play time for them with their little one. It's also been the foundation of many friendships, young and old as well as play dates (mom dates). Since, I am teaching at the Civic Center, there is always the option of having a play date afterwards in the gym.

| Everyone brought something and the children created an obstacle course. |

| We made traffic cones to use in the obstacle course. Each child decorated theirs. The children found lots of uses for them (boats, hats, shields). |

Village
Eight months ago I had a beautiful little girl named Emily. Ever since I have been itching to do a Village class with her. Kindermusik's Village is for babies 0 - 18 months and I've always viewed it as a special play time for mom and her little one. This spring we will be doing 'Hickory, Dickory, Tickle and Bounce' and 'Rhythm of My Day'. Here's some pictures from the Village classes I've taught in the past.
![]() |
| The Drum is always popular. It's adorable how the babies race for it as soon as it's they see it. |
![]() | |
| Some are more shy then others. Kindermusik is definitely a time when personalities shine and we do our best to appreciate them all. |
![]() |
| We tried rolling the balls but it mostly turned into a free for all. Still lots of good learning going on! |
![]() |
| Scarf play is a fun way to show babies rhythm and movement. |
![]() |
| It's also a great time for peekaboo. Rowan here couldn't get enough. |
