The Science Behind It

  • “Musical training as children makes better listeners later in life,” said Nina Kraus, the Hugh Knowles Professor of Neurobiology, Physiology and Communication Sciences at Northwestern. Source: A Little Music Training Goes a Long Way
  • “Music and reading are related via common neural and cognitive mechanisms and suggests a mechanism for the improvements in literacy seen with musical training,” according to the team lead researcher, Dr Nina Kraus, at Northwestern University. Researchers from the Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory at Northwestern University tested children on their ability to read and to recognize words. This was compared to the extent of their auditory working memory (remembering a sequence of numbers and then being able to quote them in reverse), and musical aptitude (both melody and rhythm).

Just a few of the reasons Kindermusik is so good for your little one.

Our Time

In the past, Our Time, has always been my most popular class. It's for children age 1.5 - 3.5 years and their caregivers. We sing, dance, explore instruments, learn social skills and just have a lot of fun. I've had many mom's tell me the class became a treasured play time for them with their little one. It's also been the foundation of many friendships, young and old as well as play dates (mom dates). Since, I am teaching at the Civic Center, there is always the option of having a play date afterwards in the gym.
Boat Hands with Thumb sailors
'Stomp hello'
Everyone brought something and the children created an obstacle course.

We made traffic cones to use in the obstacle course. Each child decorated theirs. The children found lots of uses for them (boats, hats, shields).

Village

Eight months ago I had a beautiful little girl named Emily. Ever since I have been itching to do a Village class with her. Kindermusik's Village is for babies 0 - 18 months and I've always viewed it as a special play time for mom and her little one. This spring we will be doing 'Hickory, Dickory, Tickle and Bounce' and 'Rhythm of My Day'. Here's some pictures from the Village classes I've taught in the past.

The Drum is always popular. It's adorable how the babies race for it as soon as it's they see it.

Some are more shy then others. Kindermusik is definitely a time when personalities shine and we do our best to appreciate them all.
We tried rolling the balls but it mostly turned into a free for all. Still lots of good learning going on!
Scarf play is a fun way to show babies rhythm and movement.

It's also a great time for peekaboo. Rowan here couldn't get enough.
